The 3rd City Cuntry Classic - 2012

Festivities returned to the city in 2012 with the QQQQs hosting the Great Southern Growlers from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 June on a fine array of local courses.  Here is how it played out...

Thursday 14 June at The Vines (Lakes Course)
The Great Southern Growlers opened the 2012 event with their best start ever securing two points to square the ledger after the first day.  Off-season signing Ross Baker proved to be a great acquisition for the Growlers as he built up a six hole lead with six to play against the usually reliable Todorovic.  And despite the match continuing through to the par 3, 16th, a solid par there gave Baker a convincing 4&2 win.

The Growlers other point came from the most unlikely of sources, with Grant Woods prevailing in a titanic battle over Dean Sherlock 3&1.  Neither golfer set the world alight through the first nine holes and in trying conditions, Woods held his resolve whilst his counterpart threw away a one hole lead with five to play.

The performance of the day though came from the stick of Matthew Schwarzbach who took family honours with a 1up victory over brother Damian.  His comeback from 4dn after 11 holes relived memories of Kennedy Bay three years earlier when he squared the match against his older sibling after being two down with three to play.

And in the other match, Wez Smart won four consecutive holes to turn a two hole deficit into a 2&1 victory over Rick Beet.

Match Play Results:
Damien Todorovic lost to Ross Baker (4&2)
Dean Sherlock lost to Grant Woods (3&1)
Wez Smart defeated Rick Beet (2&1)
Matthew Schwarzbach defeated Damian Schwarzbach (1up)

Scores level at 2-2

Friday 15 June at Wanneroo Golf Club
A 4BBB was played for the first time since the inaugural competition at Rosehill when not only did the Growlers fail to score a point but the evidence of their team harmony, or lack thereof, was brought to the fore.  This time was to be a different story though with the southerners coming with a different attitude for the 2012 event.

The signs were ominous though when Smart and Todorovic raced to a three hole lead after three holes over the combination of Baker and Beet.  Some gamesmanship from Beet threw the usually reliable Smart off his game though and the Double B's were all square three holes later.

The match would ebb and flow thereafter until the 15th and 16th holes where wins to Baker and Beet put them two up with two to play.  Smart and Todorovic fought gallantly though and both parred the 17th to send the match to the 18th where the Growler pair prevailed.

There was some consolation for Smart and Todorovic taking their crossover match against Damian Schwarzbach and Grant Woods who were also involved in a titanic battle in their head-to-head match with Matthew Schwarzbach and Dean Sherlock.

With the Growler pair one up coming down the last, Matthew Schwarzbach played a miraculous shot on the 18th green and holed his putt to square the match.

With Baker and Beet taking out the crossover though, the Growlers celebrated just their second daily win but for the first time, led the competition at the end of a day's play setting up an enthralling weekend of play.  It was certainly a turn around from the beginning of the day when the Growlers struggled just to find the course.

Better Ball Matchplay Results (head-to-head)
Smart/Todorovic lost to Baker/Beet (2dn)
M Schwarzbach/Sherlock halved with D Schwarzbach/Woods (AS)

Better Ball Crossover Results (total stableford points)
Smart/Todorovic defeated D Schwarzbach/Woods (xx-xx)
M Schwarzbach/Sherlock lost to Baker/Beet (xx-xx)

GSG lead 4.5-3.5

Saturday 16 June at Carramar Golf Course
With Course Superintendent Matthew Schwarzbach in the line-up, the QQQQ were favoured to bounce back on day three.  Although the round commenced under bright sky, the rain soon set in with both sides battling to come to terms with the wet conditions.

The Irish Stableford format suited the pairing of Beet and Woods with the latter making the most of being within a shot of the green in regulation for the first time since he last played Supa Golf.  The Growler pair raced to what looked like an unassailable lead after nine holes and when all look lost for Sherlock and Smart, the inner resolve of the QQQQ shone through with an inspiring halved match.

Smart was able to play through what he later described as the closest to death he has ever been when a ball narrowly missed him on the 18th.  He was able to compose himself though and win the hole ensuring the holders didn't drop further back in the standings.

The Ross Baker fairy tale came to a halt when he tasted defeat for the first time in his Growler career.  Partnering with the Growlers most prodigious player, Damian Schwarzbach, there was an expectation for both to carry on their merry way however the local knowledge of Matthew Schwarzbach coupled with some resilient play from Damien Todorovic gave the QQQQ a tight 3&1 win.

Some poor decision-making on the 18th saw Matthew Schwarzbach and Todorovic lose the crossover match to Beet and Woods 66-63.  The news got worse for Baker and Damian Schwarzbach too with Sherlock and Smart taking their crossover resulting in the coveted pair registering donuts for the day.

Irish Stableford Combined Matchplay Results (head-to-head)
Sherlock/Smart halved with Beet/Woods (AS)
M Schwarzbach/Todorovic defeated Baker/D Schwarzbach (3&1)

Irish Stableford Combined Crossover Results
Sherlock/Smart defeated Baker/D Schwarzbach (62-57)
M Schwarzbach/Todorovic lost to Beet/Woods (63-66)

Scores level at 6-6

Sunday 17 June at Joondalup Country Club
With scores level entering the final day, another tense finish ensued and whilst the QQQQ only required two matches to retain the trophy, most would have recognised their desire to win the competition outright.

And playing at the home course of Grant Woods gave the Growlers the edge in the first match where the veteran had registered a number of sub-handicap rounds in the lead up to this year's competition.  His opponent, Damien Todorovic, had been less than convincing and the signs were ominous as Woods held the early advantage after two holes.

The lead didn't last long though with Woods finding the deep bunker on the third green and never getting out.  Todorovic capitalised squaring the match and building a three hole lead by the turn.  The telling point of the match came on the 10th and 11th holes though with Todorovic holing out for a 7 and 8 but still taking both holes for a five hole lead.  The match ended two holes later.

Meanwhile, Rick Beet scored a win by the same margin over Matthew Schwarzbach avenging his loss at The Vines three years earlier.

The other two matches were titanic battles won and lost on the 17th hole.  On both occasions, the QQQQ prevailed giving them their third Classic in as many years.  Sherlock was inspirational as he accounted for Damian Schwarzbach with an amazing par on the penultimate hole.

Smart was more steady in his victory that saw Baker split his points in his debut appearance.  That brought him just half a point behind the person he replaced in half the number of appearances.

With a third consecutive win, the QQQQ added to their history creating run now being the first team to win three Classics in a row.

Match Play Results:
Damien Todorovic defeated Grant Woods (6&5)
Dean Sherlock defeated Damian Schwarzbach (2&1)
Wez Smart defeated Ross Baker (2&1)
Matthew Schwarzbach lost to Rick Beet (6&5)

The 2nd City Cuntry Classic - 2011

The Great Southern Growlers hosted the competition in the South West region of Western Australia from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 April 2011. Details and results are posted below with the Great Southern Growlers listed first in the results.

Thursday 7 April at Capel Golf Club
On a wet and rainy day, the QQQQ jumped out of the blocks in their inaugural title defence losing just one match on a day that consisted of four singles matchplay ties. The solitary point for the Great Southern Growlers came via Damian Schwarzbach, whose match with opposing captain Wez Smart was one to forget with both golfers trying to find ways to lose - Smart was the better in this department although Schwarzbach did try to hand the match to Smart by twice taking penalties for removing loose impediments when in a hazard.

Elsewhere, Rick Beet put up little resistance in his match with Damien Todorovic and Grant Woods went down to Matthew Schwarzbach with a similar result despite Woods chipping in on the last hole - four holes after his match had ended. The match between Nev van Clarke and Dean Sherlock went down to the last hole with the Growler missing a short putt to halve the match, effectively handing the ascendancy to the reigning champions.

Matchplay Results
Damian Schwarzbach defeated Wez Smart (5&4)
Rick Beet lost to Damien Todorovic (6&5)
Grant Woods lost to Matthew Schwarzbach (6&4)
Nev van Clarke lost to Dean Sherlock (1dn)

QQQQ lead 3-1

Friday 8 April at Busselton Golf Club
The Great Southern Growlers dubbed day two Fantastic Friday, bouncing back from a horror first day to take three-and-a-half points. The Ambrose format suited the Growlers with their high-handicap/low-handicap combinations resulting in a distinct advantage over their opponents.

Further leniency was given to the team of Beet/D Schwarzbach when the latter left his putter by the practice green and started the round without it. Playing the first hole with his playing partners putter, Schwarzbach added his putter on the second as his blatant disregard for the rules of golf continued.

Beet and Schwarzbach took advantage of a generous handicap and their playing partners clemency to convincingly take out their matchplay point against M Schwarzbach/Sherlock and the crossover stableford points by the slimmest of margins over Smart/Todorovic.

The head-to-head match between Smart/Todorovic and van Clarke/Woods was a tight affair with the Growlers pair hitting the front for the first time on th 17th hole after Woods holed an amazing birdie putt. The lead was short-lived though as Smart struck back with a sensational putt on the last to halve the only points of the day for the QQQQ.

Ambrose Matchplay Results (head-to-head)
van Clarke/Woods halved with Smart/Todorovic (AS)
Beet/D Schwarzbach defeated M Schwarzbach/Sherlock

Ambrose Crossover Results (total stableford points)
van Clarke/Woods defeated M Schwarzbach/Sherlock (40-36)
Beet/D Schwarzbach defeated Smart/Todorovic (41-40)

Great Southern Growlers lead 4.5-3.5

Saturday 9 April at Dunsborough Lakes Golf Course
The previous night's celebrations by the Great Southern Growlers proved to be premature with the QQQQ bouncing back with three wins on day three to set up a tantalising finish.

The round of the day came from the stick of Dean Sherlock whose chipping around the greens ensured he and partner Damien Todorovic overcame an early deficit to take out their match against D Schwarzbach/Woods with two holes to spare.

The pairing of Beet/van Clarke re-ignited the vivid nightmares of their pairing in the inaugural City Cuntry Classic at Rosehill two years ago with two more heavy losses - with four holes to play in the head-to-head matchplay and by a whopping 21 points in the combined stableford points crossover.

There was some joy for the Growlers though with D Schwarzbach's 46 point round gaining a point for his team in the crossover.

Combined Score Matchplay Results (head-to-head)
D Schwarzbach/Woods lost to Sherlock/Todorovic (3&2)
Beet/van Clarke lost to M Schwarzbach/Smart (5&4)

Combined Score Crossover Results (total stableford points)
D Schwarzbach/Woods defeated M Schwarzbach/Smart (78-72)
Beet/van Clarke lost to Sherlock/Todorovic (63-84)

QQQQ lead 6.5-5.5

Sunday 10 April at Margaret River Golf Club
A beautiful autumn day greeted the City Cuntry Classic contestants for the closing round of the 2011 event. Needing just one-and-a-half points to retain the title, the QQQQ overcame some early hiccups to gain double that number.

The match between Matthew Schwarzbach and Nev van Clarke ebbed and flowed through the opening nine holes with van Clarke left to rue a number of missed opportunities. An incorrect but spirited ruling by van Clarke on 16 when Schwarzbach hit the wrong ball would prove crucial too as Schwarzbach lifted his game over the closing nine to take a vital early point.

Meanwhile, brother Damian Schwarzbach was carrying the heavy burden of a misfiring Great Southern Growlers team and at one stage got out to a four hole lead over Damien Todorovic. The previously unbeaten QQQQ rallied though and capitalised on some missed chances by his opponent to enter the last hole just one down. Schwarzbach showed poise well beyond his mid-20s handicap, driving down the middle before finding the green from 170m out and narrowly missing his birdie putt and the birdie hole jackpot for an easy par and 2up win.

With just a point required for the QQQQ to retain their title, it would come from an unlikely source with Dean Sherlock backing up his amazing round 24 hours earlier with another win over Rick Beet with a hole to spare. The icing on the cake came when Wez Smart almost holed his jackpot birdie putt securing another point for the QQQQ.

Singles Matchplay Results
Damian Schwarzbach defeated Damien Todorovic (2up)
Nev van Clarke lost to Matthew Schwarzbach (3&2)
Grant Woods lost to Wez Smart (1dn)
Rick Beet lost to Dean Sherlock (3&1)

QQQQ win 9.5-6.5

The Inaugural City Cuntry Classic - 2009

The Inaugural City Cuntry Classic was hosted by the QQQQ in Mandurah and Perth from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 May 2009. Details of each round and the results are posted below (QQQQ are listed first in the results section).

Friday 29 May (AM) at The Links Kennedy Bay
An early morning start saw tempers erupt between QQQQ teammates on the way to The Links Kennedy Bay but this was short-lived with attention diverted to their opponents on arrival at the golf course. With the start slightly delayed as all but one member of the group paid their green fees, the QQQQ shrugged off their underdog tag with three vital wins and a half.

The random draw of opponents saw some juicy match-ups with the opening pairing of Damien Todorovic and Nev van Clarke joined by Dean Sherlock and Grant Woods. They were followed by big hitters Wez Smart and Rick Beet going head-to-head whilst Matthew Schwarzbach entertained brother Damian in a mouth-watering contest.

The Schwarzbach match-up would bring about the Great Southern Growlers only half-point in the morning session as Todorovic unexpectedly triumphed over the more fancied van Clarke, Sherlock outlasted Woods from the back tees and Smart outblasted Beet.

Matchplay Results
Damien Todorovic defeated Nev van Clarke (3&2)
Dean Sherlock defeated Grant Woods
Wez Smart defeated Rick Beet (2up)
Matthew Schwarzbach halved with Damian Schwarzbach (AS)

QQQQ lead 3.5-0.5

Friday 29 May (PM) at Secret Harbour Golf Links
The afternoon session was always going to be a tight squeeze to finish in daylight hours especially given the earlier events in the day which resulted in the delayed start.

The latter ambrose match between M Schwarzbach/Todorovic and Beet/D Schwarzbach was deemed a tie when both teams agreed to finish up on the 17th tee also resulting in the crossover matches being squared.

But in near darkness on the 18th green, the Great Southern Growlers registered their first full point when van Clarke/Woods held firm over the Sherlock/Smart combination with a closing par.

Ambrose Matchplay Results (head-to-head)
Sherlock/Smart lost to van Clarke/Woods (1dn)
M Schwarzbach/Todorovic halved with Beet/D Schwarzbach (AS)

Ambrose Crossover Results (total stableford points)
Sherlock/Smart halved with Beet/D Schwarzbach (DNF)
M Schwarzbach/Todorovic halved with van Clarke/Woods (DNF)

QQQQ lead 5-3

Saturday 30 May at Rosehill Country Club
Rosehill Country Club will long be remembered as the venue that the Great Southern Growlers self-capitulated and will go down in history as the venue at which the inaugural City Cuntry Classic was won.

Already reeling from a two-point deficit from the previous day, the Growlers were shocked to find out that the Rosehill course had an ACR of 66 meaning that everyone had to take six shots from their handicap in the Better Ball pairs format. But this shock was nothing compared to what the QQQQ encountered when a rift split the team of Beet/van Clarke on just the first hole.

Having gone into their match against M Schwarzbach/Sherlock as favourites, Beet and van Clarke were served the first lemonades of the competition, going down with six holes still to play. They would also lose their crossover by xx stableford points.

The team of D Schwarzbach/Woods faired marginally better taking their match against Smart/Todorovic to the 13th hole. The highlight of that round was Woods' sinking a 20 foot putt to halve the 8th hole only to be informed that he had hit from the wrong spot. He was permitted to putt from the correct spot (which was closer to the hole) but he missed and lost the hole.

The QQQQ took out the remaining crossover to make it a clean sweep of points for the day. Following the defeat, the Growlers labelled the course a "goat track" - quite unjustified considering the considerable work undertaken by course management to bring it up to City Cuntry Classic hosting standards.

Better Ball Matchplay Results (head-to-head)
Smart/Todorovic defeated D Schwarzbach/Woods (6&5)
M Schwarzbach/Sherlock defeated Beet/van Clarke (7&6)

Better Ball Crossover Results (total stableford points)
Smart/Todorovic defeated Beet/van Clarke (xx-34)
M Schwarzbach/Sherlock defeated D Schwarzbach/Woods (44-xx)

QQQQ lead 9-3

Sunday 31 May at The Vines Resort and Country Club (Lakes Course)
With the competition all but over, some liberties were taken with increasing the handicaps of the Great Southern Growlers and reducing those of the QQQQ. It would not make much difference though with the QQQQ still splitting the matches to result in a resounding victory.

Matchplay Results
Damien Todorovic defeated Grant Woods (1up)
Dean Sherlock lost to Damian Schwarzbach (xx)
Wez Smart lost to Nev van Clarke (1dn)
Matthew Schwarzbach defeated Rick Beet (3&2)

QQQQ win 11-5
